March 2, 2020

I had a wonderful time giving the opening keynote for the Women in Data Science conference.

I especially loved talking about some of the history of data science.

For instance, did you know that least squares has a very noble history: In the 1800 Gauss used least squares to calculate the orbit of Ceres, the largest planetoid in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Long live the linear regression we all love to malign!

The Mark 1 Perceptron, one of the first artificial neural networks, was built for image recognition. The input was an array of 400 photo cells. It was a physical machine made of wires and potentiometers that were moved by motors during training.

Isn't it amazing how quickly the field of data science has changed within the last few generations?

December 6, 2019

My comments in Forbes about the challenges Apple has with their autocorrection features given their differing stance on privacy.

Access to data has a massive influence on the quality and reliability of these technologies, a very challenging factor to balance with privacy.

mdb_20191202_97878_hf.jpg

December 2, 2019

Unstructured data can be incredibly hard to work with -- things like website traffic, customer comments and conversations, images, audio, and the list goes on. But we need to make use of it -- unstructured data is exploding in volume and variety, and the insights that can be gained from it are poignant.

I was delighted to be included on a panel at the Toronto Refinitiv Summit discussing how to harness these kinds of alternative data sources, which I believe will become the most important insight generating sources in the future.

My key takeaway: invest in it. Don't make the mistake of underestimating the time it will take to make full use of these sources. Trust me, it will be worth the wait.

But the journey is always an interesting adventure, despite the many twists and turns.

BillNye.PNG

November 19, 2019

When you go to see Bill Nye The Science Guy, you need to wear your best bow tie.

Early in my career, I worked on building our understanding of how humans understand and mitigate climate risk -- basically, we really struggle to understand it and how it could impact our lives. That's still true today, ten years later. Thankfully, people like Bill Nye are continuing to address these challenges and spark conversations like he did last night.

Like the rest of the audience, I loved Bill's interesting and funny discussion about the planets, human migration, climate change, and how scientists and technologists can change the world for the better. A very thought-provoking evening.

November 8, 2019

A year ago I gave one of my favorite talks at TEDx Navigators in Calgary and haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

During the talk, I urged audiences to rethink bias and to consider the weird, wonderful and surprising ways our own brains work - like when mistakenly they see faces in rocks or other objects.

Bias, of course, can be a huge problem in exacerbating inequality and unintentionally harming people. But there’s another side we need to be talking about.

These quirks of our mind make our human experience uniquely human. In fact, it was one of these glitches that paleoanthropologists believe sparked the development of art. And when AI’s we build have an epiphany like our ancestors did, will we even recognize it?

If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll take a listen: http://bit.ly/AI_moon

October 31, 2019

October 18, 2019

Thrilled that Thrive Global picked up my profile from Authority Magazine. Have a look!

October 11, 2019

What can humans learn from artificial intelligence? It’s a compelling question. For decades many AI researchers and technologists believed that AI could never provide the insight into problems that humans could. But the counterexamples keep coming - AlphaGo, for instance, gave us a new way of thinking about the game of Go. Unsupervised learning can allow us to understand emerging patterns we wouldn’t know to look for. I think it’s time for us to consider how AI can augment human intelligence, insight and ingenuity.

August 2, 2019

I recently spoke with SD Times Magazine about one of the greatest challenges we face in AI Ethics: No one knows whose role it is. Should ethics be a part of every practitioner's job description or should technology companies hire ethics experts to their teams? Right now it is unclear what will work.

July 18, 2019

My commentary in InformationWeek on the difficulty in incorporating human emotion in technology. Although our understanding of it is improving, we still have a long way to go.

June 14, 2019

Who says being in AI doesn't get you invited to the cool parties? A few months ago, when acclaimed folk musician Tom Kennedy asked me to create the cover art for his new album Eclecticism, I was thrilled.

Over the weekend I had the privilege to be invited to Tom's album release party, where he asked me to come on stage and talk for a few minutes about our collaboration on the album cover. We decided that we wanted it to evoke an "electric energy" to match his upbeat music style. I used a Deep Style Transfer to take an abstract image of stars and lights and transfer the style to a picture of Tom playing his guitar. I just love the way it turned out.

What a thrill to talk a little bit about AI to such an enthusiastic and lively crowd. I don't think I've gotten cheers for talking about AI before, but I can't say that anymore!

January 7, 2019

My article discussing my favorite 5 non-data-science books I read in 2018 really resonated with many members of AIDL, the largest online AI group which boasts almost 200,000 members worldwide. As a result, the article was featured in the group’s weekly newsletter. With hundreds of positive reactions and comments, a great discussion followed, and I loved seeing all the messages telling me that they picked up some of these picks on my recommendation.

December 31, 2018

Most of you know I'm a voracious reader - and I love to read books in a wide variety of fields. I find that the more I read out of my areas of expertise, the easier it is to piece things together within it.

With that in mind, I wrote a feature for Towards Data Science reviewing five books I read in 2018 that helped me as a data scientist.

December 20, 2018

I had a delightful conversation with Dataquest about the job market in data science and how, while technical skills might get you in the door, it's really your communication skills that will make you succeed in data science as a career.

Data science teams within organizations risk becoming marginalized if they can't communicate their value to the C-suite and if they collaborate poorly with other functional areas in the enterprise.

That red circle looks little from this picture but it was HUGE for me. Not only did I meet many fascinating people at TEDx Navigators, but I got to present with my mom, my husband, and many friends in the audience.

This is the first time my mom has seen me speak at an event, and the smile on her face after the talk made it unforgettable on a deeply personal level.

After all, our lives are profoundly meaningful both inside and outside of the workplace, and the best moments are the ones we can share with those important to us.

Excited that over the coming years, I will be a liaison to the JTC 1/SC 37 Biometrics committee, where we will discuss AI as it applies to facial recognition, fingerprint and retina scanning, and prevention of identity theft.
